Surfing instruction- First time introduction to surfing or intermediate level up instruction for all waves, winds tides etc. CPR / first aid safety certified. Lessons are 2 hrs and include board, wet suit and reef boots if necessary . Guide- Okinawa is full of all kinds of surf spots. Some are well known and some are still yet to be discovered. Sit down with Danny and study the next days wave size , swell direction, wind direction, tides etc. Set out each day searching for the best location on the island. Danny’s background : Born in New Hampshire in the N.E. United States. Learned to surf in Florida at the age of 10. Competed as an amateur on the United States Surfing Team at the age of 16. Competed as a professional on the World Qualifying Tour, World Championship Tour and the Japan Pro Surfing Tour. Traveled worldwide extensively as well as all sides of Japan. Has taught surfing instruction in Florida, New Jersey, California , Hawaii and Japan.

Here are a few pictures I took of the waves today around 1:30pm at Sunabe. The waves weren't perfect but they were still a bunch of fun! I snapped these pictures then dove in and got me a few nice ones! I don't know who these surfers were, but they were charging hard and ripping the hell out of the waves they got!

There is some strong swell building in the north west, could send some decent size waves our way. Only problem is the swell is building and moving fast with strong winds thrown in, so expect the possibility of junk conditions. See you out there...I actually have a day off, far out!

With all the swell coming out of the east, it is a safe guess to say there will be almost nothing on the west coast. Good time to head out to Ike Jima or other spots that face the Pacific.

The moon was amazing tonight, this photo was taken around midnight from my place in Naha. The moon was setting so quick and just got more and more orange as it dropped, finally just a few minutes after I snapped this pic, it sank below the cloud cover on it's way to the horizon. Thought it was a pic worth sharing!

It looks like suicides is the point to head to at the moment, getting reports of chest to head and glassy waves. Haven't seen any surf myself as I have been too busy to get out. Drop a comment on here anytime if you know where the waves are breaking on any given day!

Sorry for the lack of updates over the last few days, have had a friend visiting from Australia and haven't had much time to post on the blog, The swell out of the north east is coming directly towards Okinawa, expect some big waves over the next week. Still unsure about the overall condition of the surf at this point. Also you may need to look to the southern and northern tips of the east coast to find the best conditions from this swell.

There is some swell coming! It is hard to say at this point if it will be clean ground swell or if it will be a mixed up wind/ground swell. There is definitely some swell coming up from Taiwan, but the winds are kicking up with it. May be a good idea to do some coast scouring look for a beach with some shelter from the wind. However it goes down, I hope you all get some waves this week.

The outlook for surf is still looking pretty dim. The swells from both the north east and the south west are set to dissipate before getting with striking distance of Okinawa. Where is taifun (typhoon) 18? There may be some small waves on offer on Monday, but dont get your hopes up too high!

Another day of really small surf as far as I can see for the west coast, if you have any information on the east coast swells, write a comment and help out your fellow Okinawan surfers. However there maybe a little bit of swell to be found around the south east tip of the island in the next day or so. I would expect too much though as the swell is not very strong and is moving very fast.

I checked the surf at Aja today, while i was in the area. It was ankle high wind chop. I cant wait for the next taifun, got a trip to Bondi and Bali coming up in Jan, and these lulls in the swell are really taking their toll on my surf fitness, gonna surf like a kook!

A Few Surf Shots from Aja

No action shots but I did snap a few pictures the other day which I kind of liked and thought I would share. The break at Aja is becoming one of my favorites here on Okinawa. There are plenty of peaks so there isn't much scrapping for waves between surfers like you see at Sunabe. The locals are nice and don't give new guys any hassles, even got hooted for on a few waves I got out there as an unknown, which was nice.
The surf tends to break smaller than most of the other breaks on the west coast of Okinawa, but also tends to be cleaner.

99% of the waves on Okinawa are on shallow reefs. Make sure you check the tide times and heights before heading out in any solid surf. The reefs in many places can be very sharp and are often covered in sea urchins, so if you are new to surfing reefs I recommend you wear some boots for your first few surfs, and put some time into toughening up your feet, before surfing barefoot.
Always keep an eye on the taifun(typhoon) conditions, as Okinawa gets a lot each year, these waves can look super fun, but they pack a solid punch. If you are new to surfing, better to try some of the more protected breaks like Aja near Naha.
Always show respect to the locals, surfers in Japan, unlike many places around the world won't be overly aggressive, but that is no reason to kill the vibe, by paddling out and dominating a peak. Keep in mind that Okinawa is prone to some long flat spells and many of the locals may have been waiting on these waves for months.

An example of a low tide, taifun (Typhoon) Closeout slap. The reefs around Okinawa are unforgiving at low tide, saw a beginner surfer from the mainland out in this, he snapped an epoxy board and came up bleeding with urchin spins through his face. 3 hrs later it was clean and solid 5ft, was so stoked to paddle out I forgot to snap a pic...ooops my bad!

Current Taifun Info:

Checked Aja today, There was swell around, sets about head high (3ft) but due to the heavy onshore winds the wave was very sectioned and closing out. 4 surfers in the water were giving it their best, but all I saw was room enough for a quick take off and maybe a snap on a crumbling lip.
